Anu Lounela

Description of research and teaching

Anu Lounela is an anthropologist and currently researcher (Academy of Finland) in a research project “Contested values in Indonesia”. The research pays special attention to how values and human-nature relations are produced in the course of the efforts to rehabilitate the severely degraded landscape that is prone to fires and floods. Her postdoctoral project titled “Climate change disputes, values and local reasoning in Central Kalimantan” explored how local populations reasoned their claims in the dispute over climate change schemes across different scales.

Her PhD work on Contesting Forests and Power; Dispute Violence and Negotiation in Central Java (University of Helsinki, 2009) demonstrated how forest land disputes reveal the power positions of the parties in relation to state formation and her current post-doctoral research has shown how local values are produced through action indicating difficult choices in the rapidly changing environment. Her research interests include environment, nature-people relations, value, dispute, climate change and ethnographic specialization is in Indonesia on the islands of Java and Borneo.

Her recent teaching includes courses:
Courses on value (Antropologian tutkimusala I: talous ja vaihto) 2014 and 2015
Ethnography of performativity (Etnografiaseminaari I/II) 2014
Introduction to Social Anthropology (Introduktion till socialantropologin) 2018
