Further information on the affiliationI have worked in UH and the Metapopulation Research Group since 1995, and in the Finnish Center of Excellence in Metapopulation Biology since 2000. Since 5/2010 I have been holding a professorship in Conservation Decision Analysis, jointly funded by the Finnish Ministry of Environment via the Finnish Forest and Park Service, the European Research Council, and UH / Academy of Finland.

Curriculum Vitae

My research interests centre on the concepts, methods, theory and application of spatial ecology and conservation. For the past six years I have developed ecologically based, operational computational methods for conservation resource allocation. This research both combines and is supported by my education and subsequent research experience in spatial ecology and computation. One recent research aim has been to produce integrated conservation solutions that successfully tradeoff biodiversity values, costs and alternative land-uses.

My research presently focuses around the topic of "Biodiversity Conservation Informatics", how to utilize quantitative information to do good decisions about conservation and other land uses. My two main projects are the ERC funded GEDA (Global Environmental Decision Analysis) and "GIS-based Ecological Decision Analysis in the South-Central Finland Forest Biodiversity Programme". Several researchers and supporting personnel work withing these projects for 2011-2015.

Part of our work is to produce software that implements research so that it is applicable to conservation planning and environmental management all around the world.
