Description of research and teaching

Some of the most potent pharmaceuticals are derived from natural products. These small molecules are produced by a diverse selection of organisms, especially bacteria, fungi, and plants. Cyanobacteria are found in freshwater lakes, reservoirs and ponds worldwide. They  are infamous producers of toxins and are linked to the death of wild and domestic animals. However, they are also a prolific and promising source of biologically active natural products. My research focuses on how cyanobacteria produce these compounds. I am interested in the genome driven discovery and natural products. I use a combination of molecular biology, genomics and analytical chemistry to guide the discovery of new biological active compounds from cyanobacteria.
