Description of research and teaching

Elina holds a Doctor of Laws degree in European law and a Master of Arts degree in French philology and Translation studies. Her research focuses on theoretical aspects of EU law and the legal reasoning of the European Court of Justice. Additionally, her research interests include EU environmental law, legal language and legal translation. Elina also teaches part-time at the University of Helsinki, Faculty of Law. She is currently working as a legal secretary at the ECJ.

Elina's current research centres on theoretical dimensions of EU law, and, more specifically, interpretation of EU law and its interrelationship with multilingualism. She defended her doctoral dissertation 'Beyond Words: the European Court of Justice and Legal Certainty in Multilingual EU Law' in February 2011 with Professor Joxerramon Bengoetxea (University of the Basque Country) acting as opponent.

The dissertation aims at providing an account of theoretical issues related to multilingualism and legal interpretation from the perspective of ECJ legal reasoning. More specifically, the book explores how legal certainty and values typically associated with it, such as predictability, coherence, and rule of law, may be reconceptualised so as to take into account the multilingual character of the EU legal system and the many meanings found in official language versions.
