Description of research and teaching

In my PhD research (2016) I studied the transnational everyday lives of Latin American women in Barcelona and their subjectivities as migrants. My previous research has been on the migration and detention of Latin American women in Mexico (2008; 2006) and on the working conditions and work well-being in social work (review on international research, see Meltti & Kara 2009).

Currently, I work as a postdoctoral researcher in the project "Ordering the ’migrant family’: power asymmetry work and citizenisation in restructuring welfare professional bureaucracies", funded by the Academy of Finland.

Conceptually and thematically I have been interested in time and temporality in migration, migration status and irregularity, transnational family ties and connectivity, emotions and meaning-making in migration, intersectionality, (in)visibility and belonging. Methodologically my interests lie in collaborative and creative research methods and multilingual research.

My teaching has included the following topics: irregular migration, transnational migration, global social work, intersectionality in social work, ethics in qualitative research on sensitive issues.
