Description of research and teaching

My main areas of interest are early medieval intellectual history, manuscripts and the reception of patristic texts. I have studied early medieval ideas about dreams, the reception of the works of Augustine of Hippo and the early book culture of late medieval Finland.

My monograph, Dreams and Visions in the Early Middle Ages. The Reception and Use of Patristic Ideas, 400–900 (Cambridge, 2015) explores early medieval thought on dreams.

I am currently studying the pre-tenth-century annotations in manuscripts of some of the major works of Augustine of Hippo, funded by the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation.

In early 2019 I spent three months as a visiting fellow at the Institut für Mittelalterforschung of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 2015 - 2018 I held the post of an Academy of Finland Postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki.  I spent the academic year 2014-2015 as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge, fall 2015 as Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Kent, and spring 2016 at Institutum Romanum Finlandiae, Rome. In 2013 I worked on the textual histories of early chronicles the First Crusade for a project led by Dr Samu Niskanen. In 2013-2014 I co-ordinated the Codices Fennici -project for the Finnish Literature Society, mapping and cataloguing manuscripts produced and used in Finland before the seventeenth century.
