I worked as Academy Research Fellow (2012-2017) in Gender Studies in the Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies where I also have a permanent position as Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies. I obtained my PhD in politics from the University of Bristol in 2004 and became a docent in politics in the University of Helsinki in 2007. I have previously worked as ESRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the University of Bristol (2005), Senior Lecturer (2006-2008), Professor (2008-2009) and University Researcher (2009-2011) in the Department of Political Science in the University of Helsinki, as Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies in the University of Jyväskylä (2011) and Professor in Gender Studies in University of Helsinki (2012). My research areas include:

  • Gender, power and political parties
  • Gender and the European Union
  • Intersectionality
  • Gender equality policies, state feminism and gender equality machineries
  • Feminist theories of the state
  • Representation

I have just finished my third international monograph Gender and Political Analysis (with Emanuela Lombardo, forthcoming with Palgrave 2016). My second international monograph Gender and the European Union was published by Palgrave in 2010 as was my first international monograph Feminists Theorize the State (2006) and the co-edited volume Changing State Feminism (2007, with Joyce Outshoorn). I recently co-edited The Oxford Handbook on Gender and Politics (Oxford University Press, 2013, with Georgina Waylen, Karen Celis and Laurel Weldon). I am also the Editor of Palgrave Macmillan’s hugely successful book series Gender and Politics Book Series with Sarah Childs. My research has appeared in a wide range of international refereed journals including Politics & Gender; International Feminist Journal of Politics; Social Politics; European Journal of Women’s Studies; International Political Science Review; Legislative Studies; Policy & Politics; Gender, Work & Organization; Representation; and British Journal of Politics and International Relations; as well as a number of international edited volumes. My research on feminist state theories has also been re-published in the Women, Gender and Politics: A Reader (Oxford University Press, 2010).

My Academy Research Fellow project (2012-2018) is titled "Feminized actors or masculine institutions? Gender, Power and Party Politics in Finland". It provides the first-ever in depth analysis of political parties in Finland from a gender perspective. In addition to my new monograph, Gender and Political Analysis (see above), findings of the project are coming out in 2016 in a special issue of Party Politics that I co-edited with Karen Celis and Sarah Childs (two articles), in Gender, Work & Organization (two articles), and in the book Gender, Politics and the Crisis in Europe (with Emanuela Lombardo, with Palgrave 2017). Four other articles are in the review process.

I am directing the research project Gender and Power in Reconfigured Corporatist Finland (GePoCo) funded by the University of Helsinki Research Funds (2015-2017). Together with Ville Kainulainen and Milja Saari we research the gendered practices of Finnish corporatist processes.

I am at the management committee of the COST Action IS1209 ProsPol Comparing European Prostitution Policies: Understanding Scales and Cultures of Goverment (2013-2017). I participate in a number of other international research networks including Research Network on Gender, Governance and the State (RNGS), Feminism and Institutionalism International Network (FIIN), Rethinking Women’s Substantive Representation (RWSR), and Multidimensional Equality and Democratic Diversity (DEMDI) research network funded by Nordforsk (2009–2011). I was the co-convener of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) Standing Group on Gender and Politics (2007-2009) and in this capacity organized the hugely successful First European Conference on Politics and Gender (ECPG) in the Queen’s University of Belfast in January 2009 and I was in the organizing committee of the Third ECPG held in Barcelona in March 2013.

In addition to these international activities, I have published an edited volume in Finnish titled Tasa-arvo toisin nähtynä: Oikeuden ja politiikan näkökulmia tasa-arvoon ja yhdenvertaisuuteen (Gaudeamus, 2012, with Kevät Nousiainen and Milja Saari), Toinen mailmanpolitiikka: 10 käsitettä feministiseen kansainvälisten suhteiden tutkimukseen (Vastapaino, 2007, with Johanna Valenius) and a monograph Mykät, kuurot ja kadotetut. Sukupuolten välinen tasa-arvo Helsingin yliopiston yleisen valtio-opin laitoksella (2005). I am the co-director of the new Gender, Culture and Society Doctoral Programme in the University of Helsinki.  I was the co-editor of the Finnish Women’s Studies Journal Naistutkimus-Kvinnoforskning (2004-2005).  I was a board member of the Coalition of Finnish Women’s Associations (NYTKIS) and was a vice board member of Gender Equality Council (TANE) and was the vice-chair person and the founding member of the Association of Helsinki Women Researchers (2006-2009).
