Description of research and teaching

My current research project at the University of Helsinki, Finland, focuses on plant speciation, and its genetic basis. As model organisms I use outcrossing, wild relatives of Arabidopsis thaliana, like A. lyrata, A. halleri and A. arenosa. I study genome-wide gene expression and conduct QTL mapping in between population and between species hybrids. Read more on my current research: http://blogs.helsinki.fi/speciation/

Before this project I studied genetic basis of natural variation for oxidative stress in A. thaliana with Dr. Mikael Brosché. My background is in population genetics and I got my PhD degree from the University of Oulu, Finland. My thesis was on genetics of incipient speciation in Arabidopsis lyrata. Before coming to Helsinki, I worked in Umeå University, Sweden, where I tried to gain better understanding on transmission ratio distortion seen in intraspecific crosses. I’m widely interested in plants and evolutionary questions that can be answered by using them as a tool.
