Description of research and teaching

Teaching at University of Helsinki:

  • Use of UAV drones in ecological research, responsible teacher/organizer. The introductory seminar held autumn 2015 was very successful, with a lot of interest generated for using drones as tools in research. This course will be developed into a longer 1-2 week entity in the near future. I am also currently negotiating with Trafi to establish a 'Danger area' in the Lammi area which will allow us to fly at higher altitudes and beyond line of sight starting in 2017. This will allow greater opportunities for research and education in this quickly growing field and help make LBS a leader in this field.
  • Mammal ecology course (523126), visiting lecturer

I have developed the international internship program at LBS. Since it's inception in 2015 this program is quickly growing and provides a much needed study opportunity for exchange and visiting students at UH.

I am an assistant for numerous field courses at LBS.

Jaakko Junikka (2015- PhD candidate)

Minna Viljamaa (2016- MSc candidate)

Julien Salandre (2015- MSc completed)

Current Research at University of Helsinki:

Human life history:

  • Kone Foundation Funded project: Learning from our past: the effect of forced migration from Karelia on family life

Morphology, microevolutionary change:

  • Parallel evolutionary change of spring and lake populations of amphipod Pallaseopsis quadrispinosa in Finland (with Risto Väinölä)
  • Facial morphology correlates of behaviour of modern humans

  • Thermal detection of Lapwing nests using unmanned aerial vehicles (co-supervisor of Minna Viljamaa's MSc)

Outreach (YVV)

My research as well as my work at LBS has been featured in many national and international media outlets. I have also been active in the local community, through visits to high school students and making sure the Station is represented at local events. With funding from Nessling and Wihuri foundations I have spearheaded a project to make a new science nature trail at LBS that will give all visitors a chance to get to know the research done at UH and let them have the opportunity to be acitive citizen scientists.
