Kaarina Aitamurto

Description of research and teaching

My doctoral dissertation analysed contemporary Slavic Paganism, Rodnoverie, in the framework of sociological discussions about late modern religiosity. After the doctoral defence, I worked in some EU projects, which addressed violence against migrant women, populism and hate speech in Finland. At the moment, I am studying Islam in Russia and in particular in such big cities as Moscow, St. Petersburg and Nizhnii Novgorod. I am interested in examining how the attitudes towards and rhetoric concerning Islam has changed in Russia during the recent decades and how different forms of Islam are percieved. At the same time, I analyse the diversification of Muslim communities in these ethnically Russian areas and the strategies they adopt in the given social context. My research interests also include ethnography, nationalism and multiculturalism.
