Description of research and teaching

I am full-time Director of the Finnish Museum of Natural History, an independent insitute within the University of Helsinki responsible for the preservation, accumulation, and exhibition of the national natural history collections and for research and education relating to them. My focus is on management and strategic development of the institute as a whole with an emphasis on research infrastructure development in the field of biodiversity informatics at a national, European and global level. I have a research background in peatland ecology, systematics and biogeography of tropical plants, and conservation biology, but nowadays I allocate only a modest part of my time to conducting research myself.
