Description of research and teaching

My research focus lies at the intersection of ecology and evolutionary biology. I am mainly interested in the mechanisms that enable organisms to cope with and adapt to environmental variation, in particular climatic variation. Identifying phenotypic and genetic variation involved in local adaptation of wild populations is especially relevant in the context of present-day human-induced environmental change, including habitat fragmentation and climate change.

I completed my PhD in 2010 at Leiden University the Netherlands, during which I investigated different aspects of adaptation to climate in the tropical butterfly Bicyclus anynana by examining geographical variation among wild populations. I took an integrated approach to understanding how this species is adapted to spatially and temporally varying climatic conditions by combining studies at different levels of biological organization: the phenotypic, physiological and molecular genetic level.

As a postdoc in the Metapopulation Research Group at Helsinki University I continue my research with an integrated approach, combining experimental life history and physiological studies with ecological and evolutionary genetics. Using the Glanville Fritillary butterfly (Melitaea cinxia) as a study species, I aim to link variation in candidate genes to life history and thermal performance in wild populations.
