Description of research and teaching

 

Research interests

 My research interests focus on plant cell walls and cell wall modifying enzymes. In my PhD thesis, I studied lignin biosynthesis in spruce, concentrating especially on the last polymerisation step and the oxidative enzymes (peroxidases, laccases) that catalyse the polymerisation. During my post-doctoral work I have turned to the carbohydrate component of the cell walls, focusing on the structure, localisation and enzymatic hydolysis of xylan, as well as the effect of xylan on the breakdown of other cell wall carbohydrates. Currently, I am combining the oxidative methods from my PhD work to the modification of oligosaccharides for the creation of novel functional groups on carbohydrates.

 

Teaching

 I am regularly involved in the teaching of both undergraduate and graduate students, teaching on laboratory courses and occasionally giving lectures. Additionally, I have been involved in the supervision of several master’s theses. The courses I have been teaching during the years include:

  • Basic biochemistry lab course
  • Basic plant physiology lab course
  • Basic gene technology lab course
  • Advanced laboratory course on plant molecular biology
  • Advanced laboratory course for graduate students on enzymes in lignocellulose hydrolysis
  • Lecture course on field crop quality (visiting lecturer on lignin as a quality determinant)
  • Lecture course on metabolism (partly; coenzymes, glycolysis and lipid metabolism)
