Description of research and teaching

In my PhD project, I study how Finnish L2 speakers of French and native speakers of Finnish and French make requests. I have two approaches to the topic: an acquisitional (request strategies in L2) and a contrastive (Finnish vs. French) perspective. The data consist of L2 French, L1 Finnish and L1 French requests elicited via an Oral Discourse Completion Test, a metapragmatic interview and naturally-occurring service encounters (Finnish and French convenience stores; data collected by the Institute for the Languages of Finland and ICAR laboratory, University Lyon 2). I employ both qualitative and quantitative methods in the analysis. The objective of the project is to compare request strategies in L1 and L2 with regard to their (in)directness and addressing, among other things, and to compare Finnish and French requests.

I am a qualified teacher of French and English. I have worked as a part-time teacher of French at adult education centers in Helsinki (2015‒2017) and Järvenpää (spring 2013, spring 2014) and as a substitute teacher at several school levels. When I worked as a coordinator for the humanities at the LumA Science Education Centre of the University of Helsinki, I taught a course on phenomenon-based project learning to future subject teachers of various disciplines. During the course (spring 2017), the students designed and instructed a project to upper secondary school students of Espoo. In addition, I was involved in designing, teaching and assessing a course on oral proficiency for future language teachers in spring 2016. I gave a lecture on methods in interlanguage pragmatics to Master’s level students of Romance languages (25 November 2016). I have also talked about writing a Master’s thesis in the seminar of French Philology on several occasions.
