Lauri Carlson (born 1952 in Finland) studied general and computational linguistics and philosophical logic at the University of Helsinki, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Stanford University (CSLI). He has Master's (1975) and Licentiate's (1976) degrees in general linguistics from the University of Helsinki on Hintikka's game theoretical semantics. 
in the 70's Carlson held various research positions from the Academy of Finland at the department of Philosophy working with Prof. Jaakko Hintikka. In the 80's he joined the University of Helsinki Research Unit for Computational Linguistics, where he directed a project in unification based machine translation from English to Finnish. 
Since 1993 Carlson is professor of linguistic theory and translation at the Department of Translation Studies of the University of Helsinki. Carlson has coordinated or participated in a number of national and EU research projects in language technology. In 2000-2006 Carlson was invited to work as professor of language technology at the Department of General Linguistics of the University of Helsinki. Research projects which Carlson has led or participated in include EU projects WebALT, LingMachine, MOLTO, and the nationally funded Tekes projects Interact, 4M, CoGKS, FinnOnto, and ContentFactory. 
Carlson's research interests include logical semantics, dialogue, parsing and machine (aided) translation. He has published two monographs and articles on semantics, dialogue and discourse analysis, and machine (aided) translation. He has implemented a constrained language parser/generator and a Semantic Web framework for terminology. He has worked extensively on a monograph on formal tense-mood-aspect typology and is currently researching automatic reasoner-driven verbalisation of terminological definitions on its basis.
