Hellman is an internationally recognized and awarded researcher in social, sociohistorical and cultural understandings and articulations of political questions of health, deviance and social marginalization. Her research focuses especially on how political and popular discourse as well as governance practice and institutions embed views on questions (e.g. drug use, alcohol policy, gambling, brain-based addiciton) and how it effects individuals, groups and societies.

Hellman has held the lead in a series of international research projects since 2005, of which the latest is an ERA-NET-consortium regarding brain based addiction’s implications for policy and governance.

In 2015-2017 Hellman held a university lectureship in sociology at the University of Tampere. She is part of the editorial boards of Addiction Research & Theory and Journal of Research in Gender Studies. She is also guest researcher at the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).

Hellman's work has received a great deal of media attention. In June 2017 a study on the articulation of the Nordic welfare state i Finnish governmantal platforms since the 1950s was the most shared and reported news story from the university. In December 2017 Hellman was interviewed by the BBC World Service regarding Finland’s new alcohol act: Listen to the interview at the PRI.org.
