Mera information om affiliationDr.Soc.Sci., docent (adjunct professor, sociology 2012). Hellman is a sociologist with a background in literature studies and media & communication. She works as a university researcher at the Department of Social Research. Hellman's research concerns mainly lifestyles and addictions, focusing on how idea world setups are embedded in habits, politics and governance. Typically, her research projects have concerned norms and ideologies in popular, societal and professional constructs, and patterns of such constructs embedded in welfare state systems and cultures. The welfare state ethos and accountability to citizens have served as conceptual frameworks in Hellman's analyses. Drawing on social semiotics she has also developed designs for cross-country comparative qualitative studies.

Matilda Hellman is an internationally recognized award-winning researcher of understandings of and societal reactions to addictions and lifestyles. Her research has especially come to concern how science, lifestyle politics and cyber environments are entangled for purposes of governance. Hellman has held the lead in a series of international research projects since 2005. She is the director of the University of Helsinki Centre for Research on Addiction, Control and Governance (CEACG), and holds a university lectureship in sociology at the University of Tampere 2015-2017. Hellman is part of the editorial boards of Addiction Research & Theory and Journal of Research in Gender Studies. She is currently the vice president of the Kettil Bruun Society (KBS). She is a guest researcher at the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and editor-in-chief for the journal Nordic Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.
